Michael Pachter, a leading analyst recently, came out with his predictions that Microsoft’s Xbox 720 is going to beat Sony’s PlayStation 4 in terms of sales. In his presentation at the SXSW, he favored the Xbox 720 despite Sony being rumored to have a more powerful console in terms of hardware.
The analyst claims that the next generation would be dominated by Microsoft. He claims that the new console would have killer apps that feature Skype and TV tuner. Pachter further adds that Sony is going to thrive with its new generation console. One of the advantages of its consoles is in the form of the special Gaikai streaming technology.
According to the analyst, Nintendo would continue to dominate the software domain. However, he added that the sales of the Wii you wouldn’t be able to compete against the other major players. At the same time, the sales of hand held gaming devices would lose sales compared to Smartphones and PC tablets.
According to Pachter, the new era in the gaming world would end the period when publishers were mostly going bankrupt. This would further be marked by the return of the era of PC gaming. Even though PC gaming has made a comeback, it has still been affected by the dominance of the console systems.
Leaving aside the other points raised by the analyst, it would be worthwhile making a direct comparison between the expected hardware in the Microsoft’s Xbox 720 and Sony’s PlayStation 4.
The next Xbox is expected to have an x64 architecture based processor compared to PlayStation 4’s x86 architecture CPU. Both the consoles would have an 8-core CPU, but Xbox’s processor has been estimated to clock 1.6 GHz and PlayStation 4’s CPU speed is not yet known. However, it is already clear that the latter would have a Jaguar processor from AMD.
While Xbox 720 is expected to have a 1.2 TFLOPS GPUS with 800 MHz graphics, the PS4 would have an 1.84 TFLOPSRadeon based graphics engine from AMD. Both the consoles would have 8 GB RAM, but while Xbox 720 is expected to have DDR3 memory, PS4 would have GDDR5 RAM. The hard disk configurations for both the consoles are not yet declared, but they are expected to be built-in. Microsoft would fit a 50 GB 6x Blu-ray drive in its new-gen Xbox, while Sony would have a 6xCAV Blu-ray disc drive.
Sony has already revealed some of the specs about its next-gen gaming console. It would have a new Dual Shock 4 controller and special Eye specs. Both the current-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles have had their share of success in different markets. While one has been the dominant force in the global market, the other has broken records in the U.S. market.
Microsoft has not yet revealed the specs of its Xbox 720 console. Once they reveal the information, it would be worthwhile making a better comparison between the two consoles and judge whether Pachter’s speculations are going to hold ground or not. Still, it would be worth while waiting for actual product release before the entire scenario would be clear.
